Paul A. Kirschner is professor of Educational Psychology and Director of the Learning and Cognition programme in the Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies. He is an internationally recognized expert in his field. He is president elect of the International Society for the Learning Sciences (President in 2010), member of its CSCL Board, member of the Scientific Technical Council of the Foundation for University Computing Facilities (SURF WTR), and chair of the Innovative Learning Environments theme of the Interuniversity Centre for Educational Research (ICO). He is associate editor of the highly ranked journal Computers in Human Behavior, author of Ten steps to complex learning, and is editor of two other recent books (Visualizing Argumentation and What we know about CSCL). Further, he is one of the ‘instigators’ in the OpenER project at the OUNL. His areas of expertise include lifelong learning, computer supported collaborative learning, designing innovative learning environments, open educational resources, media-use in education, development of teacher extensive (distance) learning materials, use of practicals for acquiring cognitive skills and competencies, design and development of electronic learning environments, and innovation and use of IT educational systems.
